ConnPIRG Internships

Report

Intern with ConnPIRG

Every day decisions are being made at the state capitol, the Governor’s office, and Congress that impact our health, environment, economy and democracy.  For over 35 years, ConnPIRG has worked to ensure the voice of the public is represented and has fought to protect the public interest. We start with hard-hitting research on the issues and make the case for reform to our decision makers through advocacy.  However, just having the facts is often not enough, so we build power through grassroots organizing, coalition building, media work and public education to achieve tangible benefits for Connecticut and overcome the opposition from powerful special interests.

Interns working in our Grassroots Organizing Internship will work with our professional staff on a public interest issue—local, statewide, regional or federal—and then learn to develop a campaign, educate and mobilize the key constituencies, stakeholders, and the general public.

In the past, we’ve worked to stop the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms, get big money out of politics and empower small donors in our elections.

PROTECT THE PUBLIC INTEREST AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
•    Gain firsthand experience into the political process
•    Sharpen your communication skills by working with the media
•    Learn to develop and run an effective campaign to influence decision-makers
•    Gain experience recruiting and working with volunteers
•    Learn to build a coalition and work with coalition partners

Details

This is an un-paid internship. Students may receive academic credit from their college or university. ConnPIRG will participate in college work-study programs. Interns are expected to work 10-20 hrs/week.  Our office is located in Hartford, CT but our work does cover the entire state – for interns that are located in other parts of the state, work can be done remotely with occasional office visits.

Experience for Social Change Careers

An internship with ConnPIRG gives you the training and the skills you need to land a job in the social change movement after graduation. Interns gain hands-on experience working on key campaigns with experienced organizers and advocates and have a high degree of ownership and responsibility for their work. While there are particular internships described above, interns may be asked to work on other projects as well.  ConnPIRG is part of U.S. PIRG, a national federation of 35 state advocacy groups. Each year, U.S. PIRG hires passionate, hard-working, and talented college graduates to join our two-year campaign organizer program or take a job as a campus organizer. Candidates with internship experience are highly considered.
