Today, ConnPIRG joined AARP CT and the Connecticut Citizen Action Group to call on lawmakers to pass strong reforms to the broken competitive electric supplier market.

As the media has extensively covered, many rate-payers are lured by promises of saving money on electric bills by third party electric suppliers. But all too often consumers instead end up paying more, are switched from a fixed rate contract to a variable rate contract without their consent, have to pay large fees to cancel, and so on. Unfortunately, the list of abuses is long.

AARP released the results of a poll today showing that Connecticut consumers want to see stronger protections and to give regulatory authorities more enforcement tools to crack down on bad actors in the market place.

ConnPIRG has supported Senate Bill 2,  but we’re still waiting for detailed legislative language. That’s why we joined our AARP and CCAG allies to call on the legislature to get it right by enacting strong reforms.
