Some Good, Some Bad in Obama Executive Order on Protecting Antibiotics

Today, President Barack Obama issued an Executive Order – Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria. While the order takes several important steps necessary to control the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, it misses the opportunity to call for critical reforms in the agricultural sector that are essential to protect public health.

Stop the Superbugs

Local doctors called upon the Obama Administration today to immediately restrict the use of antibiotics on factory farms when animals are not sick.  The doctors are part of a nationwide coalition of more than 2,000 medical professionals working against the declining effectiveness of antibiotics due to overuse and misuse.

Study: 70% of Fortune 500 Companies Used Tax Havens in 2013

Tax loopholes encouraged more than 70 percent of Fortune 500 companies – including General Electric, United Technologies and Priceline.com in Connecticut – to maintain subsidiaries in offshore tax havens as of 2013, according to “Offshore Shell Games,” released today by ConnPIRG Education Fund and Citizens for Tax Justice. Collectively, the companies reported booking nearly $2 trillion offshore for tax purposes, with just 30 companies accounting for 62 percent of the total, or $1.2 trillion.

With a 144-0 vote, the House followed the Senate in passing Senate Bill 27, AAC Connecticut's Recycling and Materials Management Strategy.  The Senate passed the bill unanimously on Friday.
