Stop & Shop, label GMOs

A year ago, Whole Food’s committed to labeling GMOs by 2018.  But Whole Foods shouldn’t be the only store offering full GMO transparency.  That’s why we’re calling on Stop & Shop to label GMOs in their store brand products.

Saturday, March 8th, was the one year anniversary of Whole Food’s announcement that they will voluntarily label GMOs in products sold in their stores by 2018.  It’s a step that we applaud because consumers have a right to know what’s in the food they buy.

But Whole Foods shouldn’t be the only store offering full GMO transparency.  That’s why we’re calling on Stop & Shop to label GMOs in their store brand products.  To mark the occasion, ConnPIRG organized a press conference Monday with GMO Free Connecticut and the United Church of Christ calling on Stop & Shop to label GMOs.  So far, we have collected over 250 petitions for Stop & Shop stores in New Haven and West Hartford and are building a diverse coalition of organizations, businesses, and community organizations that support laeling.

Even in the absence of a national labeling law, labeling their store-brand products is a concrete and achievable step that Stop & Shop can take to show their customers that they care about their right to know.  But here in Connecticut, we do have a labeling law.  And while it won’t go into effect until four other states pass labeling laws, it is clear that Connecticut residents want and expect the labeling of GMOs.
